25 Years of Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics: by J.J. Brey, J. Marro, J.M. Rubi, M. SanMiguel

By J.J. Brey, J. Marro, J.M. Rubi, M. SanMiguel

The ebook goals to provide an summary of the former Sitges meetings, which were held over the last 25 years, with designated emphasis on issues regarding non-equilibrium phenomena. It comprises assessment articles and articles facing new tendencies within the topic, written by means of scientists who've performed a major position within the improvement of this sector. The ebook is meant as a commemorative version of the Sitges meetings. Graduate scholars of physics and researchers will locate this a stimulating account of the improvement of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics within the final years, overlaying a large scope of themes: kinetic conception, hydrodynamics, fluctuation phenomena and stochastic tactics, leisure phenomena, kinetics of part transitions, progress kinetics, and so forth.

Gibbs Entropies The Boltzmannian approach, which focuses on the evolution of a particular macroscopic system, is conceptually different from the Gibbsian approach, which focuses primarily on ensembles. This difference shows up strikingly when we compare Boltzmann's entropy--defined in (1) for a microstate X of a macroscopic system--with the more commonly used (and misused) entropy Sa of Gibbs, defined for an ensemble density p(X) by Sa ({p}) = -kfp(X)[log p(X)]dX. (3) Here p(X)dX is the probability (obtained some way or other) for the microscopic state of the system to be found in the phase space volume element dX and the integral is over tile phase space F.

D. Cohen The Rockefeller University New York, NY 10021, USA Abstract A survey is given of some of the new insights that have emerged over the last 25 years in the physics of dense non-equilibrium fluids: atomic liquids as well as concentrated colloidal suspensions. First a brief discussion of some previous developments is given: the non-existence of a density expansion of the transport coefficients; the existence of general expressions for the transport coefficients for a fluid in terms of average current time-autocorrelation functions in equilibrium and the slow decay of the latter due to mode-coupling by vortex-diffusion, a new mechanism of diffusion leading to the long time tails.
